Nakia D. Hansen
a sassy, savvy, sagacious Lover of alliteration living in Brooklyn
Hey there. I’m Nakia, your friendly neighborhood lawyer, bread baker and Beyonce stan.
My career has been more of a winding road than straight line which has allowed me to do pretty cool things and have diverse experiences.
I’ve visited Philadelphia shelters and soup kitchens to provide legal aid to the homeless, led Planned Parenthood's social media strategy from a big pink bus traveling across the South, and helped Egyptian students take their SATs amidst national unrest with the help of Facebook.
For more than eight years I focused on helping individuals and organizations utilize digital media tools and strategies to achieve marketing, communications, and advocacy goals. Now I’m part of the legal team at Planned Parenthood of New York City, Inc. (PPNYC) where I help keep the wheels turning behind the scenes to allow all of the wonderful health providers and advocates at PPNYC care for New Yorkers.
I also aid a variety of clients understand and secure trademarks for Odegard Law, a boutique law firm in New York City.
I’m very committed to making a difference and advocating for causes I believe in. I served a 5+ year tenure on the Board of Directors of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to improving societal and community responses to domestic violence and, ultimately, preventing its occurrence, and I've leveraged my content strategy expertise in service to the NO MORE campaign as a web consultant. I am a proud and active member of the Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, through which I exercise my commitment to public service and the empowerment of the Brooklyn community I now call home.
I've always had a thing for school. I earned a BA in African & African-American Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and obtained my JD from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law. With an appreciation for ongoing academic enrichment (or punishment, depending on who you ask) and a desire to deepen my expertise on the intersection of law and digital media, I earned a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
I'm always connected to one social network or another -- it’s how I keep my finger on the pulse of what’s happening down the street and around the globe. I love how once you step over the trolls and think pieces, you can contribute to conversations that fuel news, trends, and sometimes social movements. But when I’m not logged in I love to travel and try new things.
currently into: healthy cooking, designing a backyard oasis, Parisian cocktail bars, fictionalized historical shows on Netflix, my cat's purpose in life, high-cut swimsuits, yogurt in glass containers, IG Stories, shmoney, and saying "no."
Check out the rest of my little personal plot of the internet if you're so inclined and drop me line to grab a strong coffee, a stronger drink, or a sweet treat!
